When: Thu., Jan. 26, 11 a.m. 2012
A mega-best-selling novelist, born in upstate New York but a teacher today at the University of Kentucky. An author born in Memphis and with two novels featuring a resourceful (and winning) Memphian by the name of Leelee Satterfield. And a Pulitzer Prize-nominated journalist turned crime novelist who makes his home outside Oxford, Mississippi.
It's a Southern slate at this year's second annual "Literacy Is Key: A Book & Author Affair" on Thursday, January 26th, an event organized by the Memphis chapter of the Kappa Kappa Gamma fraternity and co-hosted with the Booksellers at Laurelwood.
That best-selling novelist is Kim Edwards, whose The Memory Keeper's Daughter in 2005 spent 20 weeks at #1 on The New York Times best-seller list (122 weeks total on that list). Edwards followed that success story a year ago with the appearance of another family drama, The Lake of Dreams.
Lisa Patton is the author behind that winning heroine, Leelee Satterfield, whom we first met in Whistlin' Dixie in a Nor'easter, and we followed her back to Memphis in Yankee Doodle Dixie.
Dashiell Hammet and Memphian George "Machine Gun" Kelly: They're real-life, but they're at the center of Ace Atkins' novels Devil's Garden and Infamous. But who is Quinn Colson? He's the army Ranger who returns to his home territory: Mississippi and Memphis, where he stumbles onto more than a bit of good-ole-boy and city-slicker mischief. That story, Atkins' latest, is called, appropriately enough, The Ranger.
These are the authors featured at this year's "Literacy Is Key," which will include book sales, lunch and an author program, and booksignings. Proceeds from the event go to two key causes: Literacy Mid-South and the Reading Is Fundamental program.
