Sometimes those annoying Internet pop-up ads are worth checking out.
That's what Memphian Jessica Fachko found out when she clicked on a link advertising the chance to win a ride in the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile. Fachko, 29, was selected one of 20 winners in the Win the Ride of Your Life contest, and she'll be putting the iconic dog on wheels to good use when it arrives in Memphis Friday, November 4th.
"You had to write 100 words or less about what you would do with your ride. My idea was to bring it to St. Jude," said Fachko, a nurse in the outpatient clinic at St. Jude Children's Reseach Hospital.
Originally, Fachko had planned on giving St. Jude patients a ride in the Wienermobile, but due to liability issues and safety reasons, that idea was scrapped.
Instead, the Wienermobile will remain parked, and kids will have opportunities to play inside and take photos.
Fachko also won $5,000 in the contest. With that, she paid for St. Jude and Oscar Mayer T-shirts that she'll give to kids, and she's also donating $500 to St. Jude.
"I'm also buying a whole bunch of toys for the Ambulatory Care Unit," said Fachko, referring to St. Jude's outpatient clinic. "I'll probably get a lot of video games and movies because sometimes kids are there all day."
The Wienermobile will arrive in Memphis on Friday morning, and Fachko will go to breakfast with the Hotdoggers, Oscar Mayer's team of Wienermobile drivers. Then they'll be at St. Jude from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fachko has the Wienermobile for eight hours, but she says she doesn't have any plans for it after the St. Jude visit.
Other winners have equally noble uses planned for their Wienermobile ride. Eight-year-old Journey Fontenot of Walker, Louisiana, will deliver $5,000 worth of toys to young patients at the Shriner's Hospital, and Meg Galligan of Hagerstown, Maryland, will take World War II vets on a road trip to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C.
