Lyle Lovett and His Large Band

When: Tue., July 14, 8 p.m. 2009

A genre-hopping singer-songwriter whose modest celebrity and considerable body of work have resulted in a sizable cult following, Lyle Lovett is the kind of established semi-star who can fill big halls with little to no radio play. And he’ll do so this week at Minglewood Hall. I’m not a big fan of Lovett’s recorded output — on record I find his singing too weak, his songwriting often more clever than smart, and the class-signifying jazz tinges too staid — but when I first saw him onstage fronting his big band (an outfit equally comfortable with country, folk, jazz, gospel, and blues) about a decade ago, he won me over. Lovett excels as a bandleader and is a more engaging personality in person. You can judge for yourself Tuesday, July 14th, at Minglewood Hall. Tickets are $61.50. Showtime is 8 p.m. — Chris Herrington
