Neko Case

When: Wed., Nov. 4, 8 p.m. 2009

Neko Case, whether in solo alt-country mold or belting them out with her indie-rock band New Pornographers, is one of the best singers in modern pop music. And yet I find her songs impenetrable in any context. I know people who share this experience, but they have found Case’s latest solo album, Middle Cyclone, to be a breakthrough. Me, I’m still not sure what she’s singing so strongly and beautifully about. Live, lyrics sometimes fade while sound, emotion, and musical dynamics triumph. Which means my own resistance to Case’s songs in no way prevents me from suggesting you check her out when she plays Minglewood Hall Wednesday, November 4th, with Sarah Harmer opening. Showtime is 8 p.m. Tickets are $23 in advance and $25 at the door. — Chris Herrington
