The Orlando Magic scored early and often en route to a 119-103 win over the Memphis Grizzlies at the Pyramid in front of over 17,000 on Saturday night. The Grizzlies missed key defensive assignments while the Magic scored 41 points in the first quarter alone. If the Grizzlies can see anything positive at all in this game, the squad’s rookies shined in the loss. With rookie forward Shane Battier out with a hip/groin injury, head coach Sidney Lowe looked deep into his bench for help. Rookie forward Pau Gasol led all Grizzlies with 26 points, 17 rebounds, and three blocked shots. Also, both rookie guard Willie Solomon and rookie forward Antonis Fotsis scored career numbers with 23, and 21 points respectively. Guard Rodney Buford scored 12 points, and guard Brevin Knight handed out 13 assists during the game. “Our young guys really gave us a lift and played well,” Lowe said after the game. “Brevin Knight and Will Solomon really tried to hold off the shooters. They did a great job of hustling and bringing us within 14 points, but the first quarter is really what hurt us.” About Fotsis’ play, Lowe said “he played great. He played both ends of the floor. Fotsis got some good blocks and key rebounds, he even got off some good shots. He caused a lot of problems for the Magic.” The Orlando Magic relied on four players scoring in double digits in the game. Guard Tracy McGrady scored 25 points, guard/forward Troy Hudson scored 18 points, forward Mike Miller scored 16 points, and forward Pat Garrity scored 15 points in the Orlando win. Hopefully for the Griz, the win will not set the tone for the team’s upcoming West Coast road trip which will see it to Sacramento, Golden State, Portland, and Chicago. The Grizzlies return home on Monday, January 28, against the L.A. Clippers, at 7 p.m.
