Shakespeare may be history's greatest playwright, but when it comes to potables, the man with quill and ruffle had some questionable taste. Ale was probably the country-born bard's adult beverage of choice, while in his plays, he ascribed the consumption of beer to fools.

"I think Shakespeare might change his mind if he tried some of the beers we brew today. He definitely never tried Ghost River," says Shaleen Cholera, executive director of the year-old Threepenny Theatre Company (3PT), which is hosting "Shakesbeer," a Shakespeare-themed beer tasting, on Saturday, December 14th, at Crosstown Arts. He would, no doubt, approve of a program where donors are invited to sample a variety of local craft beers and take in selections from 3PT's upcoming production of Macbeth.

Although he has worked in a limited capacity with the Tennessee Shakespeare Company, Cholera comes to Memphis indie theater by way of indie film, and he sees 3PT as an opportunity to experiment with the best he's learned from both mediums, artistically. Borrowing its name and ethos from The Threepenny Opera — an opera so cheap even a beggar can afford it — 3PT is crowdfunding shows with a pay-what-you-can box office. "We want to be able to produce quality work. We want it to be relevant, and we want it to be affordable."

Shakesbeer benefiting Threepenny Theatre Company at Crosstown Arts on Saturday, December 14th, at 7 p.m. A $10 donation is requested and can be paid at the door or through the Kickstarter.com campaign to be launched that evening.
