Classical-violin phenom Midori first caused a stir in 1982, at the age of 11, when she played with the New York Philharmonic on New Year's Eve. In 1986, under the baton of Leonard Bernstein, she broke a violin string while playing the fifth movement of "Serenade after Plato's 'Symposium' for Solo Violin, String Orchestra, Harp, and Percussion." In 1993, at 22, she performed at a fund-raiser for the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, part of a day of events celebrating the newly unveiled $780,000 upgrade of the South Hall at Ellis Auditorium, which was razed in 1999. On December 11th at 3 p.m., Midori, whose instrument is a 1734 Guarnerius del Gesù "ex-Huberman," will perform with the IRIS Chamber Orchestra at the Germantown Performing Arts Centre, a venue she played nine years ago at age 25.
