A recent headline in The Collierville Herald
gave us pause. Four Spaniels Help Sales at Awards Place made us scratch our heads, very much like an old hound with fleas, thinking that some shrewd business owner was trying to dodge the minimum-wage laws. Turns out the store in question makes custom-made plaques, clothing, trophies, and so forth, and the four dogs are the establishment s mascots, described by their owner as favorites of the regular [customers]. But here s the part that really bothers us: The dogs names are Shelby, Dottie, Happy, and Compost. Compost? What happened to Rover or Fido? Now, it s bad enough that local animal-control officials are thinking about tossing deceased pets in a landfill instead of incinerating them, but it strikes us as just a bit cruel to go ahead and name an animal for what he -- or she -- will someday become.
