Knews You Need To Know

1. Construction begins on the $27 million Beale Street Landing Project. Perhaps we're getting absent-minded, but since our city seems to be cutting services right and left, could someone tell us again exactly why we need this particular project? Just curious.

2. The U of M Tigers lose a close game to Tennessee while superstar DeAngelo Williams sits on the sidelines, nursing a sore ankle. Number 20, we really needed you for the biggest game of the season. Oh, well. At least you didn't break your leg.

3. Transportation experts say Memphis needs a fifth bridge over the Mississippi, supplementing the two railroad spans (opened in 1892 and 1916) and the two highway bridges (1949 and 1973). The main reason: Only the newer Hernando DeSoto Bridge is earthquake-resistant. Hey, do they know something we don't?

4. The Memphis City School board finally settles on the site for a new school at Hacks Cross and Shelby Drive but can't agree on the size, cost, date of construction -- pretty much everything, really. Even if we gave birth to a child right now, we don't think he or she will be graduating from that school -- if it ever gets built.

5. The owner of an automobile junkyard stymies Arlington officials, who have offered him $1 million if he will move his business out of the historic district. Allen Simpson gives a newspaper reporter a tour of his overgrown acres, points out piles of rusting cars from the 1950s, and says, "They just don't make cars like this anymore." He's right. It's hard to find rusting, 50-year-old Plymouths with trees growing through them.
