1 Workers on Presidents Island spot an 8-foot alligator in McKellar Lake. We already had plenty of good reasons not to swim there -- among them, deadly pollution and giant barges -- but we'll just add 'gators to the very top of the list.

2 Columnist Wendi Thomas returned to The Commercial Appeal after a short stint in Baltimore. That city's Sun newspaper never even ran her first column in which, among other things, she griped that crabs are harder to eat than barbecue. Well, you have to crack the shells open first, girl! Anyway, the CA treated Thomas' first column back as page-one news on Sunday, where she described her cushy Baltimore gig as "a mistake," "the error of my own ways," and compared herself to people "who find themselves in places where they didn't really want to be." Good grief, Wendi, Baltimore can't be that bad.

3 The remaining contestants from this season's American Idol visited Graceland where they met Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley. We're not really sure why. Was it to scare them straight by showing them the Jungle Room? Or by showing them Elvis' "Hall of Gold" and letting them know that no matter who the judges pick, the next Idol will never, ever sell that many gold records? Don't even think about it.

4 Spirits at the Memphis In May Beale Street Music Festival were dampened a bit by thunderstorms early in the week and scattered rain later. Look, we told you: Stop booking Puddle of Mudd. Look what happens when you do.
