The Cheat Sheet

We are always skeptical about these things, but a new national survey says that Memphis is no longer home to the most overweight people in America. That's good news. The bad news is that now we are ranked number one in the amount of time we spend watching television. Unless that TV is hooked up to a treadmill or exercise bike, doesn't one thing lead to another?

A gunman attempts to hold up a check-cashing establishment called Cash and Dash. One little problem. The place had just opened that morning, and no one had bothered to deposit any money, so the robber left empty-handed. Boy, that's awkward. But a name like Cash and Dash is just asking for trouble.

A woman and her accomplice are charged with stealing bronze funeral vases from Forest Hill Cemetery and trying to sell them to a scrap-metal dealer. The dealer, of course, quickly recognizes the vases for what they are -- urns that fit into the tops of grave markers -- and calls the cops. Maybe if the woman had only brought in a few, she wouldn't have aroused suspicion, but she brought in a whole carload, worth more than $50,000. What's next? Grave robbing?

Memphis took center stage at the Grammy Awards Sunday night. Justin Timberlake not only took home a pair of Grammys but was pretty much the star of the show, performing twice. Then Booker T and the MGs were honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Finally, Stax Records co-founder Estelle Axton received the Trustees Award, the highest honor presented to a non-musician. Elvis may have left the building, but we've still got plenty of homegrown talent here, and it showed.
