The Guilloteens' Original Drummer Dies

comment

Joe Davis, the relentless, hair-tossing, drummer for Memphis' notorious garage band The Guilloteens passed away on April 20th, in Dallas, Texas. He was 63.

In the mid 1960s, The Guilloteens -- prominently featured in Ron Halls' exhaustive History of Garage and Frat Bands in Memphis -- stood out even in a fertile scene that included Flash & The Casuals, Tommy Burke & the Counts, and The Box Tops. They rose to national prominence on the strength of songs like "Hey You" and "I Don't Believe," which was brilliantly covered by Greg Cartwright and his Memphis incarnation of The Reigning Sound on their sophomore album Time Bomb High School.

Davis, who sometimes used the stage name Joe Jett, graduated from Central High School. He moved to Texas in the mid-70s.
