The Screaming Females

When: Tue., Feb. 16, 10 p.m. 2010

As contemporary alt-rock bands led by pint-sized but powerful women go, New Jersey’s Screaming Females occupy something of a stylistic middle-ground between Ohio’s rootsy Heartless Bastards and Baltimore’s more avant-garde Ponytail. Screaming Females — frontwoman Marissa Paternoster frequently living up to the moniker — are grounded in the artier end of the punk spectrum, but there’s occasionally a blues-rock bent to the band’s riffs. The band’s most recent album, Power Move, was its first label-released record, and it’s excellent. Screaming Females play the Hi-Tone Café Tuesday, February 16th, with Jeff the Brotherhood and locals Modern Convenience. Showtime is 10 p.m. Admission is $8. — Chris Herrington
